Ruled by Fear

So many of us are ruled by fear. It’s one of the most damaging emotions that a person can have, and 99.9% of it is completely worthless.
I’m not talking about rational fear, the one where we don’t run in front of a moving bus because we are pretty sure it’s going to smoosh us, or staying away from a hot stove because we know it will burn us.
I’m talking about the fears like not taking risks (what if I fail?), fears of meeting new people (what if they don’t like me?), not owning up to our mistakes (once again, you’ll reject me)… those kinds of fears.
The interesting thing about it is, they come from the same place as the bus or hot stove fears: we think that we will be harmed.
I know, today, that nothing can harm me. Do I always act this out? Nope, not at all. I’ve got some fear issues I’m working out right now. Or, to put it more accurately, I’m trying to get out of the way and let God remove them.
I still love what Emmet Fox said about fear in his analysis of the Lord’s Prayer:
The underlying cause of all trouble is fear. If only you could realize to some extent that Omnipotent Wisdom is your living, loving Father, most of your fears would go. If you could realize it completely, every negative thing in your life would vanish away, and you would demonstrate perfection in every phase.
I know that when I am able to do this, life is good. When I’m not able to do this, life ain’t so great. And the greatness or ain’t so greatness usually has very little to do with what’s going on around me.
