Struggling with the Tithe Idea

Right now, I’m really struggling with the idea of tithing.

I know that it’s been taught that what you give will increase 100 fold. But I also know that I need to give with full faith and expectancy that all of my needs will be met.

And how much should I give? The standard amount is 10%, but is that right when you are struggling to get the bills paid?

I know that I over analyze this stuff. Too much thought and too little action.

OK, let’s break down what seems to be the major ideas about tithing that I’ve learned from various new thought sources:

1.) The amount isn’t important. What’s important is that it is an amount you can be happy giving without fear.

2.) It should go to a person or organization which contributes to your spiritual development.

Wow. It’s amazing how just sitting down here and typing a few words on a computer can clear up my thoughts on the matter. It seems like, whenever I hold onto my thoughts in my own head, I get no where. When I express them, whether it be by typing them here or talking about them, they start to clear up.

So, what is the struggle?

And: What did you decide?

The struggle is because of my past. I used to tithe in a real tit-for-tat manner: I’ll give 10%, but I frickin’ better get back my hundredfold! It did come from a place of trust, but never with a spirit of joy or abundance. It was more of a business transaction than anything else.

I guess I haven’t made a decision yet. Rather than just throwing money around, I’m going to try to temper it with a bit of wisdom and responsibility this time.

I used to struggle with tithing too. You might find this article helpful in adopting the right mindset:
