Well, look at that! I’ve gone about 26 hours without a cigarette! Woo Hoo!

Usually if I’m going to cave I’ve already done it by now, so my confidence has really improved.

It’s funny how our brains work when it comes to addictions, though. My sister-in-law and I were talking today about quiting: she hasn’t smoked in a year, and really struggled with it just like I have. And we were talking about how, even though one has failed in the past, there are two things to remember about “failed” attempts:

1.) At least you weren’t poisoning yourself for the time that you weren’t smoking, and…
2.) It’s not important that you didn’t quit in the past, but it’s important to keep trying.

So of course, immediately my brain goes to:

“See that, Lyman? At least you went this long. It wouldn’t be so bad to have a smoke: just call it a learning experience. You’ve gone a whole day, and you are healthier for it. There wouldn’t be anything wrong with buying a pack, smoking it, and then quitting again.”

And I started to consider it. Even thought the logic was pretty good…

But I really am sick and tired of quitting smoking. I know that I am not a person who can have just one on occasion. Once I have one, the craving will be back full force, and I’ll smoke another one, and another one, and another one.

I just need to get through today without smoking, and it’s a successful day.
