The answer to that question is a very personal thing. But I just read an article by Zig Ziglar that answers the question for me, and I wanted to share it:

Hi Lyman. Thanks for the link! I never would have found this one. I’m going to post it through my blog to if you don’t mind.
Hi Rick,
Your welcome, and thanks for the comment! Of course I don’t mind… the more people who read the article the better!
Thank you, Lyman.
Your welcome, Rick.
Lyman,
Ziglar’s vision of success is full of positive energy and thought. I see the value in his idea, though I’d like to share my own take. I think the things he mentions will be the (eventually or currently fulfilled) goals of many successful people. I like Earl Nightingale’s definition best, though: success is the “progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” If you are moving toward a worthy goal or worthy goals–like those that Ziglar mentions–then you are already successful! I think this is the most empowering way to define success.

I think you’re right on with that, David. I’m currently reading A Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi, and there is an entire section in it on just what success is. He presents it as the idea that there really is no failure, as long as we use our experiences for learning and growth. So we aren’t failures just because we aren’t experiencing the things that Ziglar mentions. Just like you said, as long as we are moving toward them (as long as they are what we desire), then we already are successful!
Thanks for the comment!
