Why am I Blogging?
(4)Posted on September 6th, 2006Lyman ReedUncategorized
Joe at Working at Home on the Internet published a thought provoking post today: Would You Read Your Own Blog?
It really got me thinking… how much value am I really adding to the Universe by doing this? Am I just regurgitating information that could be easily found elsewhere while hoping for an affiliate sale here and there, or am I actually adding value to that information and presenting it in a unique way?
I’ve always thought of myself as a fellow traveler (as Darren at Problogger puts it), rather than an expert in any given field… does that really qualify me as someone who should be writing about self improvement and personal development?
I did go through a period (that I feel like I’m coming out of finally) where all of my blogs were pure copy and paste jobs: the only posts here would be the Personal Development Carnival, posts to my Internet Marketing Ventures blog would be mainly copies of promotional material about one of the newest marketing programs I’d joined. I can’t even really call my Success Articles and Success Quotes sites “blogs”; I use Wordpress on those as a content manangement system (I never could get Drupal working properly on my server), but they are far from what I would consider a blog to be. And I just started another one that I’ve decided I’m going to drop…
I guess part of Creating a Better Life is to go through these phases, to find our own niche… a niche not just for our blogs, but for ourselves.
And that’s not only true of blogging, but of any activity that we choose to participate in. Is it a part of who we are, or is it just a means to an end?

Hey Lyman,
Thanks for the nod. One of the reasons for the posts was my self-doubt regarding the usefulness of my Blogging.
I think the more we learn about ourselves and our niches, the better we will get.
It just takes a lot of hard work (but you already knew that).

Howdy Joe,
I think that’s why your post struck such a chord with me, since I tend to have those same feelings. I’ve been following your posts via RSS, and always get something out of what you have to say.

Hi Lyman,
I read this post a couple weeks ago and meant to comment then and have found your blog again through a round about way starting with one of Liz Strauss’ blogs. I can relate to your self-doubt in this post (my blog isn’t even a month old yet), but you posted this last September so I bet you have moved beyond it by now. Anyway, I like your style of writing and wish you continued success!

Thanks, JoLynn. Wow, it was pretty cool to be reminded of an old post that I wrote. I’m glad you found your way back here.
And good luck on your new blog! It’s looking great.
