  • Three (possible) Reasons why the Law of Attraction isn’t Immediate

One of the biggest questions I used to have about the Law of Attraction and Subjective Reality is “If I create my own reality, and I attract what I focus on, why can’t I just think my way into winning the lottery, or close my eyes, imagine my dream life, and open them and there it is?”

There are some great explanations out there that help me to remember just why that doesn’t happen:

The Elephant Dropping a Deuce in my Living Room

One of the ways that Esther Hicks explained it in (the original version of) The Secret was by saying that we need that buffer of time. Otherwise, when we watched a show on the Discovery Channel about elephants, and thought about an elephant, one would appear, full size in all of it’s glory, in our living room. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard enough time getting my dog trained to tell us if she needs to go out; I don’t need an elephant doing it’s thing out there.

I’m not sure if this was in the movie too, but maybe it also has something to do with our discipline. Maybe the Universe is providing us that buffer because, at the moment, we don’t have the mental discipline necessary to keep from making elephants pop up whenever we think of them. It could almost be like a spiritual release valve: when we think about something too much that we really wouldn’t want, the valve opens and the thoughts get sent to nowhere.

    What Would You Really Do?

Bob Doyle touches on this in his “Wealth Beyond Reason” ebook. If you are where you are right now, you closed your eyes, and visualized your dream car, then opened them and there it sat… how would you react?

I know that personally… I would be scared out of my frickin’ mind! And I may just decide that I’ve gone insane. Because there is still a part of me that wonders just how true all of this stuff is. Which brings me to the third explanation.

All This Positive Thinking Stuff Really Is Just a Load Of…

There are other possible explanations for all of this. There is the Reticular Activating System, which is that part of our brain which supposedly is what is responsible for us seeing things that we haven’t noticed before when we become focused on a goal. Because of the billions of pieces of information that are assaulting our senses every moment, our brains filter out those things that it deems unimportant. So when we start working on focusing on what we want, it isn’t that more of what we want comes to us: it’s that we start noticing want we want more and therefore have the opportunity to take advantage of it. In other words, the opportunities are always there… we just don’t see them. But even this theory doesn’t necessarily negate the Law of Attraction or Subjective Reality, but could simply compliment them.

Any of the above explanations could be valid. The important thing here is that it does work. You attract, or create, or allow more of (just pick the word you like best) what you focus on.

Unless, of course, it’s becoming a porn star. :)

  1. Hi Lyman

Great post. Thanks for the link. I’d love to see you submit this, and/or other LoA entries to the Law of Attraction Carnival. I know the readers would definitely enjoy and benefit from your perspective.
    Happy New Year.

  2. Thanks Edward. I’ll be keeping an eye on the carnival’s topics and sending an entry your way. :)

  3. I’ll be doing more of my own research on the Law of Attraction stuff, but it sounds similar to the “self-fulfilling” prophecy theory in psychology. Is it?

  4. RY: It’s very similar, in that they both state that what you think about/focus on/expect is what you will get. The law of attraction does contain the idea that since all things vibrate, and like vibrations attract one another, you actually bring what you think about/focus on/expect to you, since those thoughts and feelings are causing your own vibration. From the psychological “self fulfilling prophecy” perspective, the focus is more on what we end up doing unconsciously or automatically to move us closer to the state we are imagining. They could both be true, with the principles behind the law of attraction causing the self fulfilling prophecy to be fulfilled.

Thanks for the comment and bringing that up!

    And Happy New Year!

So why can’t we just immediately attract what we want?
