Contempt Prior to Investigation (or… Open Mouth, Insert Foot)

“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation.” — Herbert Spencer, quoted in Alcoholics Anonymous, Fourth Edition, Appendix II, Spiritual Experience
[If you haven't read my previous article "Choose Your Own Magic Words", this one may not make much sense. Go ahead... this will still be here when you get back.]
So I’m reading through Bob Proctor’s You Were Born Rich this evening, and I get to the part of Chapter 2 where he starts talking about the mechanics of wealth building. I can tell that he’s leading up to talking about debt.
“Here we go…” I think to myself.
To my surprise, he actually has what looks to be a pretty realistic plan in there, including life insurance, a savings plan, and debt repayment.
Huh?
What happened to “Forget about debt, just focus on wealth… if you focus on debt, you’ll just create more debt?”
It’s in there too… but it’s AFTER we’ve gotten a plan together to eliminate it.
Doh!
I fell into the same trap that so many others fall into when it comes to “The Secret” - disagreement with an idea before fully exploring it.
I forgot that “The Secret” is an introduction to the Law of Attraction, not a full fledged course on using it to our advantage.
So Mr. OpenMinded wasn’t as open as he thought he was.
Anyway… back to the book!

By choosing to to explore additional resources and not regarding the first as petrified fact, you’re openminded Lyman. Napoleon Hill also talks about the importance of planning in Think and Grow Rich. I look at The Secret as being either a refresher for those who’ve already grasped the basics or a glimpse of the good to come for the rest of us, who’re still working on those basics.

That’s true, Carolyn, I am.
For me, the movie was a little of both. It reminded me of what I’d read in As a Man Thinketh and The Science of Getting Rich, but inspired me to take the actions necessary to really apply the principles to my daily life. What I learned from this experience was that I can still take just a few sentences and make a judgment about a man’s entire body of work.
