Life on Purpose - Six Passages to an Inspired Life
About a month ago I was asked me to participate in what I think is an fantastic concept for authors to get their work out there… a blog book tour. Much like your standard tour, where an author visits your local bookstore, meets with readers and talks about his book, this concept schedules various bloggers to write about a particular book, and possibly have the author answer any questions they have about it.
Today the tour stops off at Creating a Better Life.

Life on Purpose - Six Passages to an Inspiring Life by Dr. Brad Swift is an information packed book on discovering and living your true Life’s Purpose. This isn’t a “reading for pleasure” self-help book with a few tips on living your life more effectively - it’s a 231 page full on workshop, packed with exercises that one can do to dig deep within themselves and really get some answers to that question that we’ve all asked… “Why am I here?”
If I could pick a single idea from the book that resonated with me, it’s this:
Your true Life Purpose isn’t what you do; it’s what shapes what you do.
Many people equate their purpose in life with the the things they do each day - Doctor, Spouse, Writer, Salesperson, Parent, etc…
But Dr. Swift teaches us that it isn’t what we do, but how we do it - what we bring to our actions - that creates lasting fulfillment in our lives.
An example from my own life really fits well here. I’ve always tried to figure out just how I can live my life purpose while working at a day job. One of my goals is to be a professional freelance writer who earns enough so my wife and I can live comfortably while having the freedom to do the things that we’d like to.
Yet I spend 40 hours a week at a day job that is so far from that it’s ridiculous.
So I’ve spent a lot of time worrying about this: how can I justify saying that my life purpose is writing, while spending so much time not writing?
Or how can I say that my life purpose is being a loving husband, when I spend so much time away from my wife?
Dr. Swift’s book has provided some of the answers to that for me. It’s shown me that “freelance writer” or “loving husband” are not purposes… they are roles.
While these roles can express my purpose, they aren’t the purpose itself. That’s an important distinction to make… otherwise, when things change (they always do), we will have a foundation beneath us, and something to guide us through the often stormy seas of life.

I’m really looking forward to reading the commentary and reviews of other bloggers. Dr. Swift has posted a schedule of the book tour to his blog, and to provide people with quick access to other’s thoughts on the book, I plan on posting links to each of the stops on the tour below:
