This is an overview of Simpleology 101: The Simple Science of Getting What You Want1, the first recommended resource in the series My Top Three Recommended Resources - What Can They Do For You?
What is Simpleology 101?
Simpleology 101 is a free online multimedia course and workshop designed to teach you how to set and reach your goals. Within the Simpleology system, your goals are referred to as targets, and after working your way through the course, you are given a method of breaking down your goals into daily targets which will bring you closer and closer to your Ultimate Life - which can be whatever you want it to be. Simpleology 101 does this by providing you with an online WebCockpit, which is your home base for planning your days and making decisions on what will be the most effective actions you can take that day to bring you closer to hitting your targets.
The Five Laws of Simpleology
There are 5 basic laws of Simpleology:
- The Law of Straight Lines, which states that the shortest distance to your goals is a straight line.
- The Law of Clear Vision, which states that in order to reach your goals, you must see them clearly.
- The Law of Focused Attention, which states that you must stay focused on your goals in order to achieve them.
- The Law of Focused Energy, which states that the more focused you are on your goals, the quicker you will achieve them.
- The Inescapability of Action/Reaction, which states that you are always taking some action, and all actions have consequences.
These laws provide the framework for doing what you need to do in order to reach your goals.
The Two Most Important Decisions of Your Life
Another key aspect of Simpleology is the idea that there are two decisions you make that will affect how quickly you reach your goals (or if you even reach them at all):
Decision #1: Will you take actions that bring you toward you desired targets, or away from your desired targets?
Decision #2: Will you engage in behaviors that strengthen your power or weaken your power?
Your Power
Another of the main ideas behind Simpleology is that you have three basic sources of power - Time, Energy, and Money. How you use these three resources will also determine quickly you reach your goals.
The Scientific Formula for Success
Finally, Simpleology 101 presents you with the Scientific Formula for Success:
Step One: See your target.
Step Two: Keep it in your sights.
Step Three: Hit it, until you hit it.
That’s It, Your Done
I’ve just provided you with all of the knowledge you need. So go hit your targets!
No, wait… what???
We all know that knowledge is not enough - the most important part of all of this is how we put it into practice. All of the information I just gave you will do you no good at all, and as a matter of fact can be found in different forms in at least a hundred other self help books, so why should you bother with Simpleology?
That’s where your Daily Praxes come in.
Stuff to do Every Day
After you’ve got the knowledge, Simpleology provides you with the tools that you need to take this information and put it into practice. This done with something called your Daily Target Praxis.
A praxis can be defined as a discipline that is performed on a regular basis. Simpleology 101 has two basic praxes - The Daily Target Praxis, and The Daily Power Praxes. Each of these are done through through your online WebCockpit. The Daily Target Praxis is a fifteen minute procedure designed to get you focused on your goals and help you make decisions on what you will do that day in order to reach them (hit your targets), and The Daily Power Praxes (notice the plural) are designed to increase your power (your Time and Energy in 101, your Money if you choose to continue with Simpleology 102) by looking at one source of power per day and seeing what adjustments you can make in your behavior to stop taking the actions that decrease your power and start doing the things that increase it.
My Experiences
I first started using Simpleology a few years ago, back when it was first released. Then it didn’t have the WebCockpit or any of the bonus software programs it does now - it was pretty much an ebook, some audios, and some videos. It’s really amazing how much it’s grown, but regardless of the new tools that are offered, the information itself hasn’t changed, and when I applied it, it worked. I first used the principles and praxes to reach the goal of moving out to California to be reunited with my wife, which I did and am :). Unfortunately, when I DID move, I temporarily lost access to a computer, as well as to the Simpleology materials.
Since I’d already learned the material, I was able to kept practicing the principles. No, I’m not one of those “Hey, Simpleology taught me how to quadruple my income in 20 minutes” people; I don’t know of anyone who has experienced those kind of results from the system. But there are testimonials of people who have used it to create really massive increases in income. And if you think about it, when I did move out here, I was earning exactly $0 a year - which means I’ve experienced an infinite income growth since then! :).
But seriously, now that I’ve gotten stable financially, emotionally, and professionally, I’m back in the habit of working it almost every day. Some days are better than others - the days that I do my daily target praxis and stay focused on hitting my targets are the days that I get what I want and make major steps toward my Ultimate Life. And the days when I don’t put them into practice, well… I don’t.
As I mentioned in the introductory article, the entire course, the multimedia lessons, the ebooks, access to the WebCockpit, and the software downloads are all free. You will be sold on the next step courses (Simpleology 102 - The Simple Science of Money, Simpleology 103 - The Simple Science of Energy2, and the just released 7-Day Business Turnaround3 ), but none of these are necessary to get started. I didn’t start with Simpleology 102 until I was already out here in California and back to being stable, which was at least a year after I first started on Simpleology 101, and I just recently started working Simpleology 103.
Criticisms
There is really only one criticism I have of Simpleology, and it has nothing to do with the content of the course. The WebCockpit and downloadable software are still fairly new, and I’ve run across multiple typos and bugs, more than would normally be acceptable to me. Maybe it’s because I was practicing Simpleology prior to the WebCockpit, but I’m able to overlook these simply because of the massive value that the information in the course and that the software provides.
Support is fantastic, though. When I emailed them about some of the typos I mentioned, they were fixed almost immediately. When I contacted them about a feature that I’d like to see implemented (the ability to drag and drop targets to resort them), I got a response within a day, and it was implemented withing a few days. At one point my anti-virus software was incorrectly warning me about one of the Simpleology downloads, but a quick email to their support team once again solved the problem… it was my software, not their download.
I hope this has been a helpful overview of Simpleology 101: The Simple Science of Getting What You Want. The ideas contained within this system, and the tools it provides to help reach those targets are what makes it one of my Top Three Recommendations.
I’d love to hear from others who have used Simpleology themselves, whatever your experiences, good or bad. Feel free to leave your comments below, or if you prefer you can also email them to me via my contact page.
On Monday we’ll do a complete 180 (you’ll know why it’s a complete turnaround once you do the first Simpleology lesson) and take a look at my second recommended resource, the teachings of Abraham-Hicks.

Spent the morning checking it out…must admit, I am excited. My desktop looks really cool and…surprising as it may be, I am drinking water (which I literally have not done in months) and the tangled computer wire that is my brain feels pretty straight.
Set up time was pretty extensive - but seemly productive. I finally dusted off my Covey plug in for Outlook and integrated the “focus” into the “big rocks.” That seems like it will be helpful.
Browser Bodyguard alert scared me to death when I logged on to facebook
it has a “time-suck-o-meter” of 9
Went ahead and signed on for the free trial of 103 as that is my biggest obstacle right now…I think it’s the water thing.
Thanks for the transparency - I appreciate it and I am looking forward to the walk
That’s great, April! There *is* a lot of set up involved, especially in the beginning when you start playing around with all of the tools that are offered, and you watch the intro videos, and print out the checklists, do that first day… most of the daily lessons are nothing compared to that first one.
Because of memory issues (I really need to get to Best Buy) I don’t use a lot of the extra software like the Desktop Cockpit; one of my browser’s home pages is set to the WebCockpit, and that works really well. But that Desktop Cockpit sure is perty!
I *do* use the Wimiki software - it helps to keep me focused and remember to take breaks and recharge.
And LOL on the Browser Bodyguard! Since Firefox is my main browser, I don’t use that one either, but I should fire up IE and give it a shot.
Thanks for your thoughts and first impressions! I’d love to hear about your experiences with Simpleology as you get deeper into the program.
I took the simpleology 101, 102 and 103 courses. I thought they were helpful. They have helped keep me on track as I pursue my goals.
Hi Fred,
Thanks for sharing that.
I’ve done all three myself, and am still extremely happy with them.
If you weren’t aware, Mark’s got a new Simpleology blogging course started that he’s giving away for free in exchange for links on other people’s blogs. If you’re interested, check out http://creatingabetterlife.net/simpleology-blogging
The Simpleology system is actually an interesting set of tools. However, I agree that the software part can be greatly improved upon. For example, and Outlook integration module on the planner would be killer.
Absolutely, Joe. Cross-browser support is also missing in some areas (I’m a Firefox fan, but have to switch over to IE for some of the functions to work properly.)
I think that one of the reasons that I’m so forgiving of the pieces of it that are lacking is because I’ve watched it evolve from a pure paper based system (one used to have to print everything out to use it - I set up some spreadsheets a while back so that I wouldn’t have to keep writing everything on paper) into the fully online system it is today.
