I just “met” him this morning, through Laura Young’s No Safe Distance blog.
YouTube – Don’t Blame the Game: The Michael Schwass Story
I don’t think I’ve been this inspired since I first met Stephen Hopson (What were my excuses again?)
As you can imagine, being a quadriplegic can really run up the bills when it comes to proper medical care… and Laura is asking for our help.
This is far from a “give us money” plea (Michael doesn’t even qualify for Social Security Disability – damn him for being too productive!) – Laura is offering quite a bit of value to people who can help.
Here’s what she’s asking for and offering:
- Enter her drawing for a huge discount on coaching… everybody wins!
- Buy something from her beautiful All Is Well Collection of fine art prints and cards at the NoSafeDistance Gallery. All proceeds go to Michael.
- Purchase a copy of All is Well, a book of Laura’s contemplative photography. She originally created it for Michael as a birthday gift, and all the proceeds from it will go to him.
- Sign up for her newsletter (top right corner of No Safe Distance) for exclusive offers and additional savings to give you back even more from any purchases you make. She’s also asking that if you already subscribe, that you forward it to others to help get the word out.
- You can also make a donation, and you’ll get the joy of giving! Laura will cover any processing costs, so that 100% of your donation goes to Michael.
- Purchase Michael’s autobiography, Don’t Blame the Game.
- Help spread the word… Digg, Stumble, Blog, email your friends. Even if you can’t do anything financially, maybe someone you pass this on to can.
Update! Laura has upped the ante with her newest drawing – be sure to read New Drawing, More Prizes, More Fun, More Prolotherapy!
Thank you, Laura and Michael, for the inspiration this morning. I’ll close this off with a quote from Michael from the YouTube video:
“Are you controlling your challenges, or are your challenges controlling you?”

Thank you thank you thank you! Did you see the latest…his van got sideswiped by a limo at the Blackhawks opening game in Chicago. (That’s what he gets for not taking me!). I try not to make him sound pitiful or anything because from the neck up he is an amazing powerful man but, you know, the he does have some challenges. Thank you so much for helping get the word out!
Man, Laura… every time you mention the Blackhawks, or Gino’s, or anything about Chicago… I think it’s about time that I get my butt back there!
And thank you for all the resources. Michael is about the furthest thing from “pitiful” I can imagine, which is one of the reasons that I decided to write about him.
Did you catch the game last night? (Had to flip back and forth between that and the debate!) Starting to look like something! Havlat’s goal…Khabibulin rockin’ it and Patrick Sharp, whom I am quite sure dedicates all his goals to me…
Get back here definitely!
I never really followed the Blackhawk games, Laura… sorry!
But you wouldn’t believe the comments I was getting at work when the Dodgers took down the Cubs. At least I got to give some back when the Phillies took them out.
Nice find Lyman.
