“When we open our eyes, we see that life is truly amazing, how blessed we are, and that happiness is a choice.” – Steve Olson in Everything is Amazing, But Nobody is Happy

I came across this YouTube video of Louis C.K. on Late Night with Conan O’Brien via an amazing article by Steve Olson.  It really made me ponder just how much convenience, beauty, security, and abundance is in my life right now.

Never mind creating a better life… I already have an amazing one!

For instance:

When I took my dog for a walk this morning, I had this strange material on my feet that allowed me to protect them from the hazards of nature.

These things that I put on my feet cost me less than an hour of work.

All I had to do to get these awesome creations were:

  1. Provide a product and/or service to someone, who gave me these pieces of paper.
  2. I took these pieces of paper to someone else, who was willing to trade them for the foot protectors.

In the past, if I wanted to protect my feet, I would have had to go to the creator of the foot protectors and either see if I had anything tangible (chickens, tires, wheat, or something else) he was willing to trade for his product, or see if there was was a service I could provide for him (cleaning up his shop, delivering foot protectors to others, sex, or something else) in exchange for the privelege of not having my feet damaged.

Not only that… I didn’t have to go to the creator – I went to someone who traded a bunch of those pieces of paper (actually, not even pieces of paper… more likely simple numbers on a balance sheet) for a bunch of foot protectors, who then gave me a set (not just one, but two) of the foot protectors to me for similar pieces of paper.

And  I thought that all I was doing was walking my dog this morning.

I was actually experiencing the abundance and miracle of modern life.

What miracles have you experienced so far today?

What a great way to remind us of the wonder of the simple things we so often take for granted. Thanks for this!

Thank you for reminding me to be grateful for all of the things in life I often take for granted. Shoes are a great example because they are something I put on every day and don’t usually think much about at all (okay, that’s not entirely true since I’m a bit of a shoe addict and spend a great deal of time deciding which of the many, many pairs I am going to wear). After reading this post, I became so much more conscious of all the things around me that make my life such a wonderful experience. Again, thanks for the reminder — I think it would benefit a lot of people to think about this!

Wow – what a great article. It really makes you think. We do take our belongings for granted. Thanks for reminding us to be grateful for everything we have.
