There are a multitude of writings about how to increase our IQ, how to be mentally brighter, how to expand our ‘creativity thinking’. In reality, though, we can accomplish great things with the brain power we already possess merely by learning to think more clearly. Sure, it’s exciting to be ’smarter’ but it’s easier to sharpen and clarify the ‘thought power’ we already have. But how?
#1: Decide – And Let it Go
Virtually all of the decisions in our lives are really rather unimportant – yet we often drive ourselves nuts, dithering and obsessing. First, we torture ourselves over what to do and then we drive ourselves crazy over whether or not we’ve made the “right” decision. Yes, there are a few life-changing decisions that demand reflection but the wise choice is to simply make your decision quickly – and cease to regret anything. One of the most useless phrases in the English language is, “If only …”
#2: Clutter In Your Environment Reflects Clutter In Your Mind
There are a few unusual individuals who flourish in clutter, mess and disorder. But of us don’t and the sight of heaped up papers, pens, cups, folders and books hiding every inch of space is mentally exhausting. Just confronting such disorder can seem overwhelming, so a list is your best ally. Make a complete record of what needs doing and begin with just five minutes per day. That five minutes can, and almost certainly will, expand and you will feel a sense of accomplishment and mental relief when not faced with huge piles of clutter.
#3: A 5,000 Year Old Brain Booster
There truly is no practice in existence that is more healing for your mind than meditation. Virtually all of us meander through life unaware of our surroundings simply because we’re listening raptly to the babbling in our own heads. It is as though we have a crowd of noisy, argumentive people living in our mind and they’re always chattering away while we listen and even argue with them! As Eckhart Tolle so beautifully points out in ‘The Power Of Now’, living in the moment, the present, is wisdom. Meditation is the most powerful antidote to our fragmentation. Just a few minutes of silence will still the mind and create strong, fresh brain patterns.
If you need more moments of clear thinking in your life (and who doesn’t) then be aware that you have much more power than you might have believed possible. We’re not victims of the lottery where some are winners but most are losers. By focusing on physical health and experimenting with the advice above, you can allow your creativity thinking to flower and bloom and so expand the joy and prosperity in your life.

Excellent article, Sydney!
The “messy desk, messy mind” syndrome is one that I still work on. My wife and I were just discussing how psychologically freeing it is to do the simple things, like making the bed each day before leaving the house. OK, so maybe she was *telling* me how psychologically freeing it is… and she’s right, as usual.
I appreciate you sharing your wisdom with us.
Hiya
Great article!
I believe our environments are a reflection of who we are. What’s a more obvious mirror of that than the space and clutter we have around us?
The good thing is the space is always there and the clutter can usually be removed or organised.
As a meditator I recognise that this practice is one of the healthiest ways to be in our own space, away from the clutter of thinking.
Thanks
Jens
Thanks for the kind feedback. The ‘messy desk syndrome’ is one of my personal bugaboos. It’s a constant struggle to stay at least semi-organized, but it really pays off for many of us. Whenever I see piles of disorder I can feel my energy sinking. But for those of us who aren’t naturally neat, it’s not an easy task.
