The Law of Attraction, Working, and Growing Oak Trees

Just a couple of days ago, I finally got a new library card and decided to pick up James Arthur Ray’s Harmonic Wealth: The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want.

To tell the truth, I resisted it at first. I figured it was yet another book that said the same thing as a hundred other self-help, personal development, law of attraction books.  Luckily my wife was with me at the time, saw it on the shelf as well, and prodded me into checking it out.

I’m about halfway through it right now… and loving it.

One of the biggest things that strikes me about Ray’s approach to the Law of Attraction and success is that he isn’t afraid to tell people that work and time are going to play a part in achieving your dreams.

“We are growing oak trees” is the phrase from the book that keeps popping into my head. What he means by this is that we are building better lives that will stand the test of time… not quick fix, once and done solutions.

There are quite a few different perspectives on the Law of Attraction.  While reading this book, three distinct types of people came to mind:

1. People who reject the Law of Attraction outright, and have no real interest in learning about or applying it. That’s cool… but you’re probably reading the wrong blog. :)

2. People who saw a movie like “The Secret”, visualized for three days, and then rejected the Law of Attraction because a billion dollars didn’t fall into their lap.

3. People who saw a movie like “The Secret”, visualized for three days, noticed that the billion dollars didn’t fall into their lap, and continued seeking.

I’d say that Ray’s work (he was the guy in “The Secret” who talks about giving up on this stuff before it has a chance) is for people who fall into that third category.

The funny thing is that – in the Secret movie – time and taking action are discussed.

Two examples that come to mind immediately:

1. In the original edition, Abraham discusses what life would be like if we visualized an elephant and one appeared full on in our living rooms (it ain’t pretty). (Here’s an older article discussing that.)

2. Joe Vitale talks about how “The Universe likes speed” and taking “Inspired Action” – neither of which jives with sitting on your butt waiting for the stuff you want to drop on you out of the sky.

Taking these two ideas, and combining them with Ray’s idea of allowing the time for your oak trees to grow gave me the inspiration and direction to know that the future I want really is pulling at me (to drop a hint at another idea in the book) – all I have to do is get out of it’s way.

Sitting on my butt – now there’s a great way to be in the way.
