It is important to know when your baby should be born, not only to properly plan your maternity leave (and baby gift receipt). If pregnancy is too long beyond the expected date of childbirth, medical intervention such as induction of delivery or a caesarean may be necessary. The calculation of the date of delivery is not as precise as it might seem. According to the empirical method, a pregnancy lasts 38 weeks (266 days) from the date of fertilization, and the date of fertilization is normally presumed to be within 14 days after the beginning of last menstrual period.
